TI introduces motor drivers supporting integrated power management and CAN interface for automotive safety
A few days ago, Texas Instruments (TI) announced the launch of three new devices to further enrich the industry ’s first family of automotive motor drivers, helping TI customers design automotive applications that meet ISO26262 functional safety requirements. The DRV32xx-Q1 series currently includes 4 three-phase brushless front FET motor drivers that support built-in diagnostics. DRV3202-Q1 can provide automotive system designers with integrated power management and CAN interface, which can help them reduce board space and reduce design complexity in safety-critical applications. DRV3203-Q1 and DRV3204-Q1 can help TI customers design safety-critical applications that meet the ASIL-B standard, while DRV3201-Q1, which was previously launched in October 2012, can help TI customers design safety-critical that meets ASIL-D requirements application.
The 3 newest motor drivers in this series can provide designers with space-saving high reliability options to help them cope with space constraints and the challenges of harsh conditions such as high temperature, low voltage start-stop and cold start. The main features and advantages of the DRV32xx-Q1 series:
· Optimized the number of components and board space for cost-sensitive and space-sensitive [Suyao1] applications: DRV3202-Q1 integrated voltage regulator and CAN interface can reduce the number of components, minimize system cost and minimize board space;
· Built-in diagnostic function: DRV32xx-Q1 series integrated front FET driver short circuit, over / under voltage and over temperature hard-wired diagnostic circuit. The microcontroller of this system can not only communicate with the DRV32xx-Q1 series quickly, but also monitor the internal status through the serial peripheral interface (SPI);

· Simplified design for start-stop and cold-start applications: DRV3201-Q1 has an integrated boost regulator and does not require large capacitors to maintain battery voltage. In addition, the DRV3203-Q1 and DRV3204-Q1 have an integrated low-dropout linear regulator (LDO) and external FET, eliminating the need for large capacitors or external boost regulators. This integration simplifies the design and speeds up the development process.
Highly integrated motor drives meet the needs of non-safety-critical automotive applications
In addition, TI has further expanded its DRV8x motor driver product camp and introduced the latest devices for automotive applications, which can fully meet the needs of various series of motors such as brushed DC (BDC), stepping and brushless DC (BLDC). The highly integrated DRV8801-Q1, DRV8823-Q1, DRV8832-Q1, and DRV8301-Q1 can reduce board space by up to 60% compared with similar competitors, enabling a lower cost and smaller design. All 4 devices support operating ambient temperatures of -40 to 125C, which can fully meet the needs of non-safety-critical automotive applications such as retractable navigation screens, adjustable side mirrors, adaptive headlights, fuel pumps, and seat and door control. New devices include:
· DRV8801-Q1 brushed DC motor driver: supports a wide operating voltage of 8V to 38V and a peak output current of up to 2.8A;
· DRV8823-Q1 four-brush bipolar stepper motor driver: supports a wide operating voltage of 8V to 32V and a peak output current of up to 1.5A;
· DRV8832-Q1 brushed DC motor driver: supports a wide operating voltage of 2.75V to 6.8V and a peak output current of up to 1A;
· DRV8301-Q1 3-phase brushless motor pre-driver: supports 6V to 60V wide operating voltage and highly integrated current 1.7A gate driver, 1.5A buck regulator and dual low-side current sense amplifiers.

3-phase brushless front FET motor driver for safety-critical automotive applications:
· DRV3202-Q1: has already begun to supply, using HTQFP 80-pin package;
· DRV3201-Q1: Has already begun to supply, using HTQFP 64-pin package;
· DRV3204-Q1 and DRV3203-Q1: Grade 1 (Ta = 125C) devices can be ordered immediately, while Grade 0 (Ta = 150C) devices will be available in October 2013. Both Grade 1 and Grade 0 devices will be available in HTQFP 48-pin packages. DRV3203-Q1 is available on demand.
