Sharp mass-produced OLED panel in the first quarter to break Samsung's monopoly
Sharp president and chief executive officer Dai Zhengwu said that Sharp will begin mass production of OLED panels in the first quarter of this year, thus breaking the current monopoly of Samsung Electronics. In addition, Sharp will also launch smartphones equipped with its own OLED panel in June or July this year.
Dai Zhengwu told the media in Taipei today that Sharp had completed sample production of mobile phone OLED panels in December last year and is currently preparing for mass production, but actual shipments will be arranged according to the customer's product launch date. In June or July of this year, Sharp will launch a smartphone equipped with its own OLED panel.
The Nikkei reported earlier that Sharp will become the first panel maker with the ability to produce OLED panels based in Japan. Today, Sharp has become a Foxconn subsidiary and is actively seeking to supply screens for the Apple iPhone X.
Currently, Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Display, is the sole supplier of iPhone X screens, and Foxconn is the exclusive founder of iPhone X.
In December last year, there were reports that Samsung Display will supply 180 million to 200 million flexible OLED panels for Apple iPhones this year. Last year, Samsung supplied about 50 million OLED panels for iPhone X.
Last week there were reports that as Apple’s demand for OLED screens grew, Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi were planning to switch to mini LED screens this year. Analysts said that switching to a mini LED screen will not only solve the problem of OLED screen shortages, but also reduce costs.
