According to IHS iSuppli's inventory survey report, Japan's Renesas Electronics was the world's largest supplier of automotive semiconductors in the first quarter, while the overall market inventory level is still high.
Renesas ’automotive semiconductor revenue was US $ 727 million, far ahead of other competitors. The following manufacturers are German Infineon, French-Italian company STMicroelectronics, American Freescale Semiconductor and Dutch NXP Semiconductors, as shown in Table 1.
Overall, the inventories of automotive semiconductor suppliers continue to fluctuate, and the high inventory levels in the first quarter indicate a serious excess of inventories. The inventory-to-sales ratio in the first quarter averaged 69.8%, close to the highest record of 73.0% set in the fourth quarter of 2008. The number of days in stock (DOI) is close to 96 days, which is lower than the high of 100 days set in the fourth quarter of last year, but higher than the 92 days in the second quarter of last year.
Although the inventories of major automotive semiconductor suppliers are at a relatively high level relative to operating income, many suppliers actually believe that channel inventories are "too little", which may be because suppliers expect their semiconductor customers to bring considerable business growth. Benefiting from the backlog of demand in the US auto market, global auto production is expected to increase 6% this year from 2011, which is higher than the 4% previously forecast.
This forecast gives hope to automotive semiconductor suppliers, who expect demand to remain moderate this year. IHS iSuppli believes that this will eventually help balance inventory and make inventory levels more closely match overall demand conditions.
Renesas ’automotive semiconductor revenue is close to US $ 750 million, mainly due to its leading position in the microcontroller (MCU) industry. MCU accounts for 44% of the company's overall semiconductor revenue. However, due to financial difficulties, Renesas announced that it will outsource the entire MCU production business to TSMC, and will announce other statements on organizational and financial aspects. In the first quarter, Renesas ’operating income fell 3% from the first quarter ’s $ 752 million.
Infineon ranked second in the field of automotive semiconductors, operating income of 594 million US dollars. In the first quarter, the relevant inventory fell by 3% month-on-month, and its inventory-to-sales ratio was 52.8%, the lowest among the five largest suppliers.
STMicroelectronics ranked third, with automotive semiconductor operating income of 455 million US dollars, accounting for approximately 23% of its overall operating income. Its management said that the inventory in the channel was "appropriate" and that Asian stocks were "well prepared for the market to start again."
Freescale ranked fourth with operating income of US $ 392 million and is expected to grow further in the second quarter. It is believed that it is adjusting its manufacturing operations to balance excess inventory in the first quarter. Freescale has the highest inventory-to-sales ratio, reaching almost 86%. Like Renesas Electronics, Freescale's operating income has also declined month-on-month, but its decline has been even greater, down 11% from $ 441 million in the fourth quarter of last year.
NXP Semiconductors ranked fifth, with operating income of automotive simulation and discrete components of $ 342 million. The company's inventory level in the first quarter is the same as the previous quarter, and it is not considered a problem. The delivery time is short, and the management is focused on being able to deliver to customers in a timely manner.
